I spend many hours at Barnes And Nobles throughout each week, I've become a familiar face to many people who also frequent the book shelves of this quiet refuge in the middle of our noisy city that is Newport News.
Someone once came up to me in B&N, asking me why I was always there with my face in a book or typing intently on a laptop. We had seen each other in passing many times but this time we walked out together as the employees of the bookstore herded us to the front door at closing time on a wintery Thursday night, as they have done many times over the past few years.
To be specific they asked me four questions that started off somewhat cliche but eventually really got me thinking. Their first question was pretty straight forward, but by the fourth question I knew that I had to really look inwards.
Why Do You Enjoy The Work You Do?
“To get people healthy” I replied.
After all, I am a personal trainer, our goal is to get people off of their coach and into the gym so they can stay out of the doctors office! But they weren’t satisfied with this answer, so they took it a step further.
What Exactly Does Your Work Do?
“We energize the human spirit by helping people safely add lean muscle and burn fat.”
I thought this would suffice, I was really trying not to go on a long winded rant. This elicited a slight eyebrow raise, but still, they wanted more...
What Are You Passionate About?
“Fueling passion. I enjoy igniting peoples lives through exercise so they can be the best version of themselves for their self and their loved ones”
I knew at this point I was getting closer to the source of my drive to do great work. I was starting to gather my thoughts one last time to really give him the answer he was looking for.
That's Great!...But What Makes Your Heart Sing?
I knew this would require more than a straightforward answer, he needed a real life example of the true impact of my work.
“I have this client who came to us wanting to add lean muscle. I asked why and she replied “I want to be strong”. I asked why and she said well for the past year I was taking care of my sick husband who eventually passed away a few months ago. During this time I lost track of my health because I was so busy caring for him. I had such a tough time finding quality foods he would willingly eat so most of the stuff wasn’t the healthy foods we were used to, so I would snack on that when I had time as well. I gained over 30 pounds in one year throughout this process and I know it’s time to make a change.
I asked her why she wanted to get strong rather than thin (like most of our clients say). She opened up, explaining how tough it was now that she was on her own and she wanted to show her kids how strong their mom was so that they would feel strong for themselves. She wanted to set an example, as any loving mother would. There where times where she would take breaks during the workouts to cry in the bathroom, times where she couldn’t finish the workouts because of the shear overwhelm of emotion. But in time, she has, and continues to become strong. Not just physically, but more importantly mentally and emotionally.
This is why I have no problem working and researching for at times 15 hours each day. I have over 20 more clients with similarly amazing back stories and my job is to show them how to become the hero of their own movie. Because of this, I have no problem burning the midnight oil as often as possible.”
See, that’s the power of a fitness transformation. For every achievement of physical adaptation, there is an underlying biological transformation that occurs. This underlying transformation can not be seen, but it can be felt. It has the power to completely overhaul someone’s current emotional state and transform them into a much more energetic, happy, passionate, and strong human being.

By now he was impressed, his eyes were now opened to the power of a lifestyle transformation. I was glad that I successfully answered his question because it was freezing outside and I wanted to hop in my Saab and head to Chipotle for my evening Chicken Bowl with half white/half brown rice (life hack= you get more rice and subsequently chicken if you do this). I thanked him for his interest, he replied that he would never hire a personal trainer that answered any differently when he wanted to make a heathy change. I told him thank you, gave him a few things he could do to get started today, and we parted ways. My job was done. Chipotle here I come.
