A Complete Stranger With A Healthy Curiosity.
I spend many hours at Barnes And Nobles throughout each week, I've become a familiar face to many people who also frequent the book shelves of this quiet refuge in the middle of our noisy city that is Newport News.
Someone once came up to me in B&N, asking me why I was always there with my face in a book or typing intently on a laptop. We had seen each other in passing many times but this time we walked out together as the employees of the bookstore herded us to the front door at closing time on a wintery Thursday night, as they have done many times over the past few years.
To be specific they asked me four questions that started off somewhat cliche but eventually really got me thinking. Their first question was pretty straight forward, but by the fourth question I knew that I had to really look inwards.
There I was, laying in bed, wide awake listening to my alarm go off. It was 3:30am and I was about to be late for my 4am client. Yes you read that right, my first client was at 4am, followed by 6am, 7am, and 9:30am. I had just taken a quick hour nap because I was woken up at 2am by my drunken roommates coming home from the bar. A frequent occurrence as I lived in what was predominantly student housing for a local college.
A number of questions raced through my mind: Had I made the right decision to give up Air Force Officer School?—the “safe” choice — to pursue my passion — a career in the fitness business? Would I be stuck making $16,000 a year for the rest of my career?
Would my mother, who had landed in this country as an immigrant from Trinidad with $100 in her pocket after her family business went askew, be proud of my decision, or would her story serve as a lesson to stay away from the risk of the business world. Would she feel that her only son was squandering the opportunity to make it in America?
The Worst Moment Of My Career
A year ago I was working about 10 hour training days between the two gyms so I could pay my bills and student loans. One of these locations was Ft Eustis, a local military base. I had about 8-10 clients at this location at the time, one of which had been with me for about 2 years.
She was the spouse of an active duty military doctor and Colonel in the Army. She mentioned to me periodically that my services might be great for her husband as now that he was in his mid 50’s he needed to work a little harder to pass his Physical Fitness Tests.
